Sheriff Antonio D. Hash

Proven Leadership

Sheriff Antonio Hash is honored to serve the City of Roanoke in his second term as Sheriff. Since first assuming office in January 2022, Sheriff Hash has led the agency with a clear focus on transparency, innovation, and meaningful community connection.


The commitment to community service and relationship-building continues as the agency is, consistently working to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the community served. Sheriff Hash was the first within the agency to expand its public presence by establishing both the Law Enforcement Services Division and Community Engagement divisions, ensuring the Sheriff’s Office remains visible, accessible, and responsive beyond traditional enforcement roles.


Guided by his mottos, “We Do It Better Together” and “We Are Stronger Together,” Sheriff Hash emphasizes collaboration as the foundation of a safe, thriving community. As a former School Resource Officer (SRO), he places high priority on the safety, well-being, and development of elementary students, ensuring SROs are not only protectors but also trusted mentors and positive influences within schools.


Under his leadership, the Sheriff’s Office has expanded opportunities for residents formerly known as inmates through the creation of (R)IGNITE, Residents Individually Growing Naturally & Intentionally through Education. This evidence-based initiative focuses on education, reentry support, and personal growth, while helping reduce recidivism and strengthen community reintegration. Sheriff Hash has also increased training opportunities for deputies, modernized internal processes, and championed professional development aligned with the evolving demands of 21st-century public safety.


Addressing mental health remains a key priority for Sheriff Hash. Through (R)IGNITE programming and the implementation of a Peer Support Team for both sworn and non-sworn employees, he has reinforced a culture that recognizes wellness as essential to effective service for residents and staff alike.


Sheriff Hash is steadfast in upholding the City of Roanoke’s values of diversity, inclusion, and equity, working to ensure the Sheriff’s Office reflects and respects the community it serves. As he continues to serve the community, the Sheriff's Office will continue to show what Excellence in Service looks like.

Background

Sheriff Antonio D. Hash is a proud lifelong resident of Roanoke. Born and raised in Roanoke City, he attended Roanoke City Public Schools and has deep roots in the community. He and his extended family continue to call Roanoke home, demonstrating a strong personal commitment to the city he serves.

Professional Career

Sheriff Antonio D. Hash brings extensive professional experience and a strong commitment to service to his role as Sheriff of Roanoke. Throughout his career, he has earned numerous certifications and played a vital role on the accreditation team that helped the Roanoke City Sheriff's Office achieve certification as a recognized law enforcement agency. Sheriff Hash’s dedication to professional development and community service has been a guiding force throughout his career.

Before being elected Sheriff, Sheriff Hash was actively involved in giving back to the Roanoke community, working to strengthen relationships and foster unity. In recognition of his selfless community contributions, he was awarded the prestigious Key to the City by Mayor Sherman Lea Sr. in 2019.

Sheriff Hash’s leadership experience extends beyond law enforcement. As a former CEO of a not-for-profit organization, he brings a unique skill set to the Sheriff’s Office, allowing him to effectively manage the agency. He is committed to lifelong learning, having completed the National Sheriffs’ Institute Jail Administration Course (2022) and the National Sheriffs' Institute Leadership Development Course (2023). Sheriff Hash continues to expand his expertise through ongoing training, conferences, and mentorship in law enforcement, leadership, and community engagement.

A key focus for Sheriff Hash is addressing mental health challenges, both for residents and deputies. His creation of R(IGNITE), a program for residents within the Roanoke City Adult Detention Center, and the implementation of the Peer Support Team for sworn and non-sworn employees highlight his commitment to this issue. Sheriff Hash is dedicated to strengthening partnerships between the Sheriff’s Department and community programs, ensuring the department serves the public with integrity, respect, and care.
